Who is the course offered through?

BHC School of Design is a well-established institution in the heart of Cape Town. Coming up on 40 years in business, the college is a household name when it comes to all things interior decorating and design. While the physical campus is based in Woodstock, Cape Town, where our face-to-face courses and programmes are taught, we offer the online courses as distance learning that anyone can enroll for.

What do all these acronyms mean?

POE – Portfolio of Evidence

LMS – Learner Management System

Enrollment

Do the courses have set start and end dates, or can you join them at any time?

The courses have set start and end dates so that you can experience a personalized course, where you will have the guidance of a course coordinator every step of the way. You will receive one-on-one feedback and guidance from the course coordinator, as well as the ability to ask questions at any point during the course. By joining a synchronous course, you also get the benefit of learning along side others who are following the same learning path and you can share experiences or ask questions to your classmates.

Do you have access to the course forever?

When the courses end, your access to the content ends. You are still able to log in and access your certificate of competence from the LMS at any point.

Do I work at my own pace or do I have to learn during set times of the day?

The way in which the courses have been structured allows working professionals and students to learn in the time they have available to them. The courses are based on online lessons with written content and pre-recorded videos to guide you along week by week. There is a module with a new topic covered each week, but the previous modules will still be available to you, so if you do fall behind, you can catch up should you need to.

Are there set lesson times that I must attend?

There are a handful of virtual events that do happen live during the beginning and end weeks of the courses, but these are held after working hours and are recorded so that if you miss them, you can watch the recording in your own time.

Course specifics

Do I receive guidance, or can I ask questions during the course?

Yes! Each course has a dedicated course coordinator who will guide you through the course via email and through the LMS (Learner Management System – the online space you will use to access the course content and other tools). They will communicate with you each week about the week’s topic, including what is to be expected from the week and the assessment for that week. You are also welcome to ask questions via email or using the tools on the LMS.

Completion and Certification

What do I get at the end of the course?

Once you have successfully completed the final assessment: the POE, with a passing mark, you will receive a certificate of competence. This is a digital certificate which can be used for LinkedIn or any other digital platform. You can access your certificate from the LMS at any point when it has been awarded and issued.

Are there tests and exams that I have to study for?

There are 2 assessments per week. A short quiz at the end of the module which can be taken again, and a slightly more contextual assignment based on the module content. In total the quiz will take about 5 minutes and the assessment will take roughly an hour or two to complete each week.

Are there strict deadlines for the assessments?

Each week there is an assessment based on that week’s content, this does not need to be submitted each week at a certain time. Each assessment will be compiled into a Portfolio of Evidence (POE), which is a portfolio of all the assessments completed over the whole course. The POE needs to be submitted 1 week after the course concludes, so there is time to complete any assessment that may need to be caught up, finished off or updated for the final hand in.

How do I know if I am doing the right thing for my POE?

Towards the end of the course, you will be given the opportunity to get feedback from the course coordinator about your POE. You can ask questions and submit your POE as it is at the time when the course coordinator communicates with you. Here you will receive feedback on the assessments that are in your POE and any guidance on how to improve your work, should you need to.

Are there any CPD points awarded for successfully completing the courses?

The African Institute of the Interior Design Professions, or the IID, awards CPD points for successful completion of the course. These points range between 1 – 4 points depending on the course you choose to complete.
