COURSE INFORMATION

BHC School of Design offers a dynamic 3-year, full-time Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design (NQF Level 7), fully accredited by CHE and SAQA. This qualification is designed to equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to thrive in the interior design industry or pursue further academic study. The curriculum is informed by the latest industry trends and encourages the development of innovative, real-world design solutions for residential, hospitality, commercial, and retail environments.

In first year, students are introduced to the foundational principles of interior design, including design theory, spatial awareness, materials, and presentation techniques. Second year focuses on refining creative and technical skills, while deepening knowledge in areas such as construction, services, and sustainability. By third year, students are encouraged to think critically and independently, producing professional-level design work and a comprehensive portfolio that reflects their personal design identity and industry readiness.

Key subjects include Interior Design, Technical Drawing, Digital Visualisation, Construction and Detailing, Materials and Finishes, History and Theory of Design, Professional Practice, and Work-Integrated Learning. Throughout the programme, students are guided by experienced lecturers who bring a wealth of industry insight to the studio environment.

Design Principles 1
This module introduces the foundations of interior design, including space planning, ergonomics, and conceptual development. Students learn to think creatively and apply design principles to domestic interiors through sketches, models, and presentations.

Interior Design Materials 1
Students explore the properties, uses, and sustainability of interior design materials. The module focuses on helping learners make informed material choices while understanding practical and aesthetic considerations.

Visual Technology 1
Learners are introduced to technical drawing and presentation techniques using both freehand and computer-aided drawing tools. By the end of the module, students can produce accurate 2D floorplans, sections, and elevations.

Style & Structure 1
This module offers an introduction to key architectural and design movements, from ancient to modern styles. It provides context for the evolution of interiors and the construction methods used in each era.

Critical Studies 1
Students begin to explore visual culture and design theory. The focus is on understanding how design reflects and shapes social, cultural, and political ideas.

Building Construction & Compliance 1
This module introduces students to basic construction methods and building regulations. Emphasis is placed on domestic architecture and the practical requirements of residential interiors.

Design Principles 2
This module builds on first-year knowledge, focusing on more complex design challenges across domestic and commercial spaces. Students explore concept development, responsible design practices, and advanced presentation techniques.

Interior Design Materials 2
Learners deepen their understanding of materials and finishes, with a strong focus on sustainability. They engage with suppliers, research material life cycles, and develop detailed design drawings for various applications.

Visual Technology 2
This module advances students’ digital skills with a focus on 3D modelling, digital rendering, and creating virtual presentations. Students also explore technologies like AR, VR, and human-AI collaboration.

Style & Structure 2
Students study 20th-century design movements and their influence on architecture and interiors. The module connects historical knowledge to construction methods and current design thinking.

Critical Studies 2
Students critically engage with key design theories such as modernism, postmodernism, and regionalism. The module helps develop a deeper understanding of visual culture and its role in shaping design.

Building Construction & Compliance 2
This module focuses on building systems, services, and compliance for both domestic and commercial buildings. Students learn how to prepare council submissions and gain insight into project management.

Design Principles 3
In this final design module, students tackle advanced briefs in hospitality, retail, office, and commercial spaces. The focus is on developing a personal design style and compiling a professional portfolio that showcases technical and creative strengths.

Professional Practice
This module prepares students for the industry by covering business plans, client-designer contracts, and project documentation. Learners also build a professional CV, digital portfolio, and social media presence.

Style & Structure 3
Students explore future-focused design thinking through concepts like Speculative and Critical Design. They consider environmental, social, and technological issues while developing detailed drawings for innovative design solutions.

Critical Studies 3
This advanced theory module explores topics such as feminist design, spatial psychology, and visual culture. Students are encouraged to connect complex theories to their own design work and articulate these in both writing and presentations.

Research Methods A & B
Across two semesters, students learn how to conduct academic research, analyse case studies, and develop a full design research proposal. These skills support both their theoretical and practical work.

This three-year interior design degree includes a range of practical and theoretical modules designed to equip students with the creative, technical, and professional skills required for the industry:
